Does Anemia Cause Tinnitus?

Anemia is a condition which is classified as a blood disorder and affects hemoglobin levels in the bloodstream, causing them to be below what is considered normal. Hemoglobin is nothing more than the pigment in the red blood cells which are responsible for carrying oxygen to the various tissues within the body. There has been a lot of research done on the link between tinnitus and this condition with the ultimate conclusion that there is a close and real association.

One’s diet can also affect whether or not a person develops problems with tinnitus. When a person lacks the proper amount of certain minerals, it can easily lead to a ringing, whooshing, or buzzing sound in the ears. While the sound that is perceived may be different from person to person, the cause can be the same.

If someone has a severe enough iron deficiency, they can easily develop tinnitus. The severity of the tinnitus depends on how serious the mineral deficiency is, varying depending on the individual. An iron deficiency is a common explanation for anemia which in turn can cause tinnitus. This particular condition is referred to as sideropenic anemia.

Someone with anemia has problems with getting enough oxygen to various parts of their body which can lead to numerous problems. The ears are just one part of the body which can be affected by this condition, causing the person to hear sounds which have no apparent outside cause. In a majority of cases, anemia develops over a certain period of time. As a result our bodies adapt to the mineral deficiency, going unrecognized and untreated for a prolonged period of time.

There are numerous steps which can be taken for those who have anemia-induced tinnitus, including getting more iron-rich foods into their diet. Apples are very high in iron and are important for those with this particular health problem to eat. By eating two to three apples each day, the iron levels in the body can stay at a healthy and normal level.

An increase in caffeine has been linked to tinnitus and it is also bad for those who have an iron deficiency. By avoiding drinks like coffee and tea as much as possible, those who struggle with tinnitus can reduce their symptoms to a minimum. It is important to carefully examine one’s diet, especially if tinnitus caused by anemia is a problem.
