Does Ibuprofen Cause Tinnitus?

Ibuprofen is used primarily to reduce swelling and inflammation which can lead to various aches and pains, including headaches and tooth pain. Just like any other medication, there are certain side-effects that you should be aware of before you take it. Although it is considered to be fairly rare, tinnitus is occasionally a side-effect for certain people that take it.

Through the numerous studies and trials that Ibuprofen has gone through, tinnitus has never been a significant side-effect for most people who take it. There are some who have claimed that their tinnitus has worsened or that they started to experience a ringing or buzzing noise when taking it, though most people did not have this particular complaint.

Aspirin and other similar over-the-counter pain medications have been known to cause tinnitus for some people, although this reaction is fairly rare. A vast majority of people who do experience tinnitus from taking Ibuprofen usually do not have problems with it after the medication has cleared their system, though it could theoretically persist longer under the right circumstances.

Those who take Ibuprofen for something like muscle or tooth pain should be aware that it can cause tinnitus for some people or worsen tinnitus in those who already have it. Although some people who have taken Ibuprofen in clinical studies/trials have complained of ringing in their ears, researchers are still not sure exactly what causes it.

People whose tinnitus is agitated by Ibuprofen will want to try other over-the-counter pain medications or even natural remedies which can be just as effective but without the adverse side-effects which Ibuprofen sometimes comes with. While tinnitus is considered to be a fairly rare side-effect of this anti-inflammatory pain medication, there have in fact been some people who have claimed that they experienced ringing or buzzing in the ears afterwards.
